Mojoworld 2.0 is a stand-alone application, comprised of a complete set of tools geared towards the creation of terrain and natural landscapes.? Using fractal algorithms, the software is capable of rendering procedural terrain-scapes and natural phenomena such as clouds, bodies of water and star fields.?Where Mojoworld differs from most terrain generators is that, here, you are creating whole worlds instead of isolated vistas.?
LEARNING MOJOWORLD 2.0
A rather stylish and ,dare I say it, fun manual awaits those wishing to learn Mojoworld.?Ring bound and with a funky luminous blue and gold cover, you immediately feel like you are in possession of, as the manual describes, a alien artefact.? In fact the analogy of being some kind of planetary explorer is used quite frequently when describing the package’s many facets.?All well and good really, considering that the rather sticky subject of fractal mathematics lies at the very core of the program’s heart.?
The manual admirably tries to skirt around the nitty gritty as much and as often as possible, but you know in the back of your mind that it is going to have to start getting technical eventually.?Fractals are generated around ‘Basis Functions’, Mojoworld supplies many of these functions to play with. It is when you get to the explanations of these functions that you start to delve into the world of ‘Lacunarity’, ‘Sparse Convolution’ and other meaningful gems.?But, do you really need to know how these work in order to get up and running in Mojoworld??Thankfully not.?A rather generous amount of pre-built worlds are supplied, to explore and examine.?It is these worlds, more than anything, which vastly improve the learning curve.?
Within the interface is a planet generation Wizard.?Although, to be honest, this falls woefully short of its full potential.?The options it provides are a mixed bag, whilst it does go some way to achieving it’s aim, I personally, had more fun through using the software, via the pre-supplied worlds.?
A rather nice utility supplied with Mojoworld is the ‘Mojo Vox’ chat facility.?Much like IRC in interface, Vox connects you directly with other Mojonauts, as they are affectionately known.?All in all a invaluable resource, and more than makes up for Pandromeda’s lack of community message board.?
THE USER INTERFACE
Following on this space-age ideology is the User Interface.? The user is presented with a stylish and minimalistic approach to UI design.? Divided into three distinct levels of detail and complexity.?For those wishing to explore a world there is the ‘Transporter’ interface, consisting of basic movement and the ability to create movies and still renders.?For actual world creators there are two different types of UI.?The ‘Generator’ UI and the ‘Pro-UI’.? To simplify matters the Pro-UI is completely hidden unless called for.?
The Generator interface is the program’s central hub.?Split into approximately eleven editor windows it is possible to access every option within a few button clicks.?These editors are modeless, thus remain hovering above the main viewport at all times.?When not being used, they rather handily dock into a permanent toolbar seated next to the main viewport.?The Pro-UI, in comparison, is very similar except that it allows you to access the fractals at a much deeper level.?Being hidden, it lies in waiting for the more advanced user.?
The main viewport, that you view your procedurally created world from, is entirely Open GL based and does it’s job very efficiently.?Only one window is accessible, the current camera window, but that really is all you need.?Being procedural the viewport goes through a series of progressive refinements while the view is idle, thus keeping performance to a maximum.? To help speed things up further, particularly for capturing camera fly-through’s (more on this later), a wireframe mode is also available. |
