Pandromeda MojoWorld 2.0回顾-创造全世界2


  Being a world generator it makes sense to begin looking at how the package creates worlds. Procedural fractals are not new. The technology has been around for a long time in CGI’s history. Mojoworld is the first package that has used them beyond driving materials and displacements on polygonal geometry. Mojoworld does do this, but at more of a core level, with greater implications. When you start adding fractal materials you are doing so on a world level. Isolated areas of terrain geometry no longer apply here. When you create a default landscape, without any fractals, it is as a sphere. Once you add fractals to drive displacements and materials you begin creating a planet. A planet that you really could spend hours exploring. That’s hours of exploration from outer space or millimetres above the ground. Being fractals they can generate a infinite level of detail. Resolution is not even a issue.


  To that end, how easy is it to create a planet? The short answer is…very easy. It’s all down to materials. Basis functions are combined with other fractal algorithms to create naturalistic procedural maps that when applied to your starting sphere create fantastical and photo realistic looking mountains and valleys. Phew. The interface couldn’t be simpler. A simple window containing a preview of your procedural texture and a simple tree menu to create a hierarchical material. The only difficulty lies in knowing which basis functions to use and what values to punch into the many parameters. It is worth mentioning that the complexity of the parameters range from simple sliders to being able to construct complex operations, depending on whether you are using the Pro UI. Bounding volumes allow the user to isolate areas of a planet, these volumes can have separate materials of their own applied. Using this mechanism it is entirely possible to localise areas of terrain that have a completely different look and feel to the rest of the planet. A welcome addition, and semblance of control, over a planet’s creation, that simply doesn’t come from creating one material to suit all.
